Rappahannock—1949
Everyone knows the “Old Man of the Old Year”, always depicted with a long beard and scythe, shows he’s taken a terrific beating. On the whole, the “Old Man 1949” has been an eventful one in iRappahannock.
1949 has seen a number of events: the county’s newspaper made its appearance; the dial telephone system spread over the entire county; the largest single shipment of apples left the county; a citizen celebrated her 100th birthday anniversary; a native son became the president of a State college; Miss Dollie Hite’s book on Rappahannock history went to the publisher; and the county sea.t celebrated its 200th birthday.
Who can tell? The future may show us that 1949 was the greatest year in (Rappahannock’s history, for many babies were born in the county. Among these very young citizens there may be a future President, an Edison, an Einstein, a Madam Curie, a Marion Anderson, or a Jane Adams.
