A straw mulch also delays blooming in the spring, and lessens the danger of frost damage.

When the new growth starts in the spring, the mulch can be swept back into the space between the rows, with just a small amount left around the plants. Placing the mulch between the rows will help keep weeds down, conserve moisture, and keep the berries clean.
