Turkey growers are following * trend toward earlier marketing, and expect to sell 40 per cent of the 1950 crop before November; 1.
D. U. Livermore, poultry marketing specialist at VPI, says last year 35 per cent of the crop was sold before -November 1. ' As for production—it exceeds last year’s by 26 per cent. The Virginia crop of 1,908,000 turkeys is the largest crop on record. The State now ranks fifth in the na-< tion in the number of turkeys raised, compared with seventh last year, and twelfth in 1947.
Although turkey poults hatched in Virginia exceeded last year by 50 per cent, shipments of poults to other states also increased, bringing net poult placements in the State to 2,400,000. A death loss of 20 per cent accounts for the difference between poults hatched and turkeys raised.
