We ere a mealy-mouthed generation, is an accusation thrown at editors of today’s newspapers. Old-time editors pulled no. punches states the accuser, in stating their views. As a sample, he quotes the following from a Colorado weekly dated February 14, 1896.

(It can be noted that the date is Valentine’s Day—but ’twas no love note the editor wrote. It is also quite evident that the edi: tor’s rival was running for the legislature, and another item in evidence is that there was no love lost between the two editors.)

“ * idea that . . . . would want any help from the one column foot rot that has been an abortion on. the people of this county for the past five years, if he should be a candidate for the legislature! I don’t think so. I don’t think he is a candidate for anything. If he was he would want* the support of a newspaper that the people had confidence in, and not by a man whose personal life is so nasty and filthy and steeped in vice. The blossom on his nose tells the company he keeps. His putrid carcass should be relegated to the gangrene ward at the poor farm; the dead and dirty flesh would soon drop from the bones, leaving only the dry bones of a Swede jumpingjack. They should be carefully disinfected and strung on wire and placed in the hands of Judas with Jnstmctioji»Ua-Pj.tH the -string -apd^ see the little shrimp dance.’

In the same issue the editor further stated “A little, cheap, booze grafting, tinhorn gambler named . . . lias for the past six years been skinning this county through his blackmailing sheet.”

Perhaps editors are mealymouthed, as they are accused. After careful thinking, the name of one single editor cannot be raised to mind who would dare voice, with such strong language, tys opinion of anyone. >
