If properly done, aerification in no way interferes with the appearance or use of the lawn. The surface is not roughened even on the finest golf course putting green. Water and fertiliser. enter aerified soils easily, and grass roots grow deeper, making the grass better able to stand the drought. Lawns* that are aerified periodically require less than half the irrigation water needed by those on compacted soil.
Another^ new practice for yearround fine lawns is a mixture of cool season grasses (bluegrass, fescue, bentgrass) with warmseason grasses (bermuda, zoysia) which are promising for greatest freedom from weeds and economical upkeep. The new Merion (B* 27) bluegrass is one of the best of the cool-season varieties tested in combination with warm-season grasses. Alta and Kentucky 31 fescue also show promise.
