The statement made by the President in regard to the Marine Corps seems to me to be particularly unfortunate at this time.
As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee who took active part- in passage of the -iQgUlaij'kn- providing /»r- unification of the armed services and spelling out the functions of the several arms of our national defense, I totally disagree with the President that Congress intended that “the Marine Corps is the Navy’s police force." * ‘
The Marine Corps is an integral part of our national defense and one of the most vital of our combat units. Section 206 of Senate Bill. 758, approved July 26, 1947, specifically outlines the functions of the Marine Corps, a perusal of which will satisfy any person that it is intended that the Marine Corps be a very important integral part of our combat forces, organized, trained and equipped to perform especially difficulty and dangerous combat service, which is far and beyond a designation of a Navy police force, as described
