The country is getting crazier and crazier, was a sage observation of a local citizen after reading about the woman doctor out west who kidnapped a child. To read any daily paper and see all the things that occur throughout the breadth and depth of our fair land, one would be inclined to agree. And yet, perhaps all of this odd behaviour cannot be limited to modern times. Somewhere back in my memory is a family story of a great-uncle, He was what they termed “absent-minded.” Whatever the term, the truth remains: it iwas known that he spit in the middle of the bed and threw has prirt in the fire.

I may reach the day. when— I, too, will do peculiar things, such as my great-uncle, but, please, may I never become so demented as to kidnap a child.

They say the poll tax is rapidly disappearing and that only six (or eight) southern states still have it. "The preaching has been long and loud against it. The undemocratic practice of charging a man for his right to vote has been a hue and bellow. Those iwho listed themselves agin it were numerous and noisy.
Those few who are for it say little. There still remains that -side, however. The capitation tax will actually keep no one from voting if he wants to Vote; plenty of people pay the tax and then, won’t go to the polls (as evidenced in the last election).
