Decline of ‘Eating Apple*
Market Seen in Virginia
Virginia’s apple industry had better improve its methods lest-it continue to suffer declines in market prestige, states a dispatch from Richmond.
Such is the view of the Advisory Council on the Virginia Economy, which recently issued an exhaustive 98-page report on the state's apple business.
The report takes Virginia producers to task for having taken the easiest, short-term road in the face of growing competition.
When the fresh fruit, “eating apple” markets began to decline for the Old Dominion product, most growers simply turned the crop toward processors who manufacture cider, vinegar, and other apple-base products.
Now, state growers have two types of competition to fight. First, all apple growers in the nation are being plagued by the inroads made by citrus fruits into the fresh fruit field. Second, the Virginia producers have to compete with Washington state and Michigan apples into the southern market.
