The comer stone was laid in 1881 by the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows Lodge from Luray, Va. This fete drew a large crowd from the adjoining counties, a free witl offering was raised by each donor placing his or her gift in the comer stone, which had been hewn out. A bystander from Luray seeing all this money placed in the comer stone and failed to see the trustee remove it, but did see the stone placed in the building, thinking all the money was left 4a the stone, he came by night and removed the stone, but only found a few pennies.

This church has had seven pastors: Rev. George W. Homer, Rev. Davenport, Rev. James S. Fields, Rev. James S. Woodson, Rev. D. H. Banks, B.D.; Rev. Isadore D. Richards, and Rev. R. C. Davis. .

Under Rev. Fields’ administration, the church was german . sided, and a new roof put. Rev. Fields who would often walk from his home in Winston, Va., and back, donated a full year’s salary toward improvement on the church.

Under Rev. Banks’ reign, additional land was purchased from Mrs. A. Wood to enlarge the yard; a vestibule and bell tower were built, church lengthened 10 feet; choir room and pastor’s study built, choir stand built and 1400 pound bell installed.' To finance all of this the church was forced to borrow a sum of money —before the loan was paid the pastor’s health broke down, thereupon Mrs. Anna W. Green the church organist and choir instructor organized in the church and school a club, known as the Gold Star Mothers Club, which played a large part in liquidating this debt. This club still exists and is doing good work. Incidentally Mrs. Green organized a similar club in every school community while she was supervisor.

Under Rev. Richards, cathedral windows were installed in the church and electric organ installed, and robes purchased for the choir.
