FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, WASHINGTON, VIRGINIA

The First Baptist Church of Washington, Virginia, is located on Main street, about 325 feet from the comer of Wheeler and Main. This church was organized by Rev. George W. Homer in the year of 1876 with 45 members, all of whom were baptized in Rush River the same day. Since there were no Negro churches in the town, this group was allowed to carry on their worship services in the old church which stood on Lot 41 on Wheeler street. This lot was set apart, we are told, by one Mr. Wheeler for Christian worship and to be used forever for that purpose. However, the few members continued to hold their»meetings in the above named church until August 28, 1880 they purchased a lot on Main street from the Witzpatrick and Dear heirs, at a cost of 50.00. This lot was deeded to the following trustees: James * Banks, Lewis Barbour, Milton Cliff in, John Gillis, Charles Roy and Lewis Carter, Sr., the following year they started a building on tiiis lot and called same First Baptist Church. The cost of this ■ building was shared: one-third by the Rising Hope Lodge Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, who maintained an assembly hall above the church.
