Earl B. Combs of Woodville was named a new director of Rappahannock National Bank at the stockholders’ luncheon meeting Tuesday, January 8. The eight directors renamed are Robert W. Miller, Wade H. Massie, Jr., C. E. Johnson Jr., E. M. Jones, J. W. Fletcher, D. D. Miller, T. V. Williams, and A. C. Latham. Mr. Combs was named to fill the vacancy, caused by the death of John A. Keyser.

J. Rodes Brown, Jr., cashier of the bank, served as toastmaster at the luncheon served by the ladies of the auxiliary of Trinity Episcopal church. Guests included P. M. Anderson of Marshall Bank and Trust Company, Randolph Nuckols of the First and Merchants Bank of Richmond, and Giles H. Miller, Jr., of Culpeper National Bank, who was the speaker of the occasion.

With “Your Pocketbook and the Government” as his subject, Mr. Miller injected a bit of wry humor as saying “you are custodian of funds until about March 15” when most of it goes to the govern-* ment.

Attempting to explain the incomprehensible figures of government debt and spending, Mr. Miller gave an illustration of "How much is a billion?” by saying: if you had gone into business in the year 1 A.D. with a billion dollars and had lost f1000 a day from

billion would be gone.

The speaker quoted figures from tile Alabama speech of Senator Byrd and agreed with the Georgia Senator George that the hope of the country lies in reducing expenditures and getting people to Tealize that the governipent can give out only what it takes in, minus a large administrative fee.

Mr. Miller applauded the farmers for their stand of independence and williness to start an example of refusing "hand-outs.” He expressed the firm conviction that until everyone relearns that America was. made great on earning the hard way by work, that the country wifi continue to weaken. He cited as a great danger to the nation’s freedom the fact that we are beginning to fail to notice encroachment on our freedom.
