He called upon Fort Ticonderoga to surrender in 1770, and when the British asked him by whose authority he said, ‘In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress!” Naturally, the British surrendered. Ethan Allen is sometimes called the liberator of Vermont, though just what be liberated it from I don’t know. Anyway, there’s a very nice statue of him in the State House at Montpelier, Ver-i mont.- In his Literaray History of the American Revolution, Mr. M. C. Tyler states that Ethan Allen was ‘a blustering frontier shero—an able-minded ignoramus of rough and ready humor, of boundless self-confidence,’ and so forth. I have gone rather thoroughly into the matter and I find no statues of !Mr. Tyler anywhere.”
