The Maiers had impresed me without question as men with determination and wills to do. How should I answer them ? My reply was, "Can you get by for a five year period? There was no such thirtg as a Soil Conservation District in those days yet we decided contour cropping should be the first step. A three year rotation of corn, small grain, and hay was chosen with approximately 10 acres in each. We got the corn in on the contour that year. Maier’s yield was only 18 bushels per acre, all nubbins. That fall we selected the best two acres to put in barley hoping we could eventually come to a rotation of barley, wheat and hav, doing away with the corn.
