He wasn't that kind of a Democrat. Grandpa was the kind of a Democrat who upheld clean government. He didn’t like the idea of politicians acting as though they owned the government and the people.

Now old Grandpa was a frugal man. He believed in thrift and he always tried to save a little for a rainy day. He 'was the kind of a Democrat who insisted that this idea of thrift and economy and decency characterize his government. If Grandpa were here today and learned about our 262billion-dollar debt, old Grandpa would say a thing or two and people wouldn’t accuse him of doubletalking either. Grandpa was straightforward with his politics.

If Grandpa were alive today he would say, "I helped make the Democratic Party. And I didn’t make it along the lines that it is being run today.” Then he would-; start throwing out the bums.

Grandpa didn’t have much respect for political bosses. Grandpa bossed the Democratic Party and if he iwere here today he would let the bosses know he is the boss. Things would surely enough be popping if old Granddad were here with his high principles of Democratic behavior.

Grandpa would punch someone in the nose if they argued with him about a federal anti-poll tax law. If he were here today and someone said that Washington was giving the orders, he would say, “I’m not taking orders. This is our Democratic Party and we give the orders. We don’t take them.” That old gent loved the Constitution and if he were alive at this moment he would be going up and down the state of Mississippi demanding respect for this bulwark of freedom. Don’t sell Grandpa short. He -was a man of principle. The Democratic Party was made to suit his ideals. Grandpa would not tolerate the idea of re-shaping his party to fit the sham and make-believe of a lot of radical pressure groups
