Softening-Up Process

The technological advances made in industry through invention, first of machines and then of better and better machines, have enabled American workers to produce more (while toiling fewer hours and to earn ever-increasing real wages. Machines have taken away much of the back-breaking effort and thus have made the lot of the worker easier and more pleasant. . Most of us are agreed that this is as it should be and most of us hope that further inventions will make possible even better machines that will further increase the production of the worker, afford him even greater real wages and make for him a still easier and more pleasant existence. This benefit to the worker has come to him through a combination of his own efforts and better machines.
But beneficent as all this may be, it is a softening-up process which portends danger to the welfare and safety of this nation.
