Mrs. D. E. Walter Wins Prize
In U. D. C. Essay Contest ,
Mrs. Deward Edgar Walker of Front Royal has received notice from Miss Edna Howard Fowler of Los Angeles, California, historian-General of the general division, United Daughters of the Confederacy of the United States, that her biographical essay, “Life of Governor\ Zebulon Baird Vance, ■Governor of the State of North Carolina during the Period of the War Between the States,” has won first prize at the annual convention of the U.D.C. held in Biloxi, Mississippi, November 11.
Mrs. Walker, president of the “Warren Rifles Chapter” U.D.C. in Front Royal, has the unique distinction of being the youngest known daughter of a Confederate veteran in the entire United States, by his first and only marriage. Her father was the late Philip Byrd Eastham, a member of the 43rd Battalion, Mosby’s Rangers of Northern Virginia during the war between the states. A native of Rappahannock county, Mr. Eastham later moved to Front Royal.
