Last year acording to records of the Game Commission, there were only two fatal accidents resulting from the use of rifles, with approximately SCO.OOO gunnery in the field. One of these fatalities resulted from a highpowered rifle, and one from a 22 caliber rifle. There were three nonfatal accidents caused by rifles, also, one of which was known to have been a high-powered rifle. All rifle accidents occurred in the mountain counties west of the Blue Ridge.

“There was only one fatal shotgun accident west of the Blue Ridge, whereas, in eastern counties there were 6.. fatal accidents and S nonfatal accidents resulting from shotguns.”

Quinn summed up the situation as follows: "Last hunting season there was a total of 29 hunting accidents, 13 fatal and 16 non-fatal. Two of the fatalities were from rifles as were 3 of the non-fatalities. There were 9 fatalities from shotguns and 13 non-fatalities. Twp ‘coon hunters were drowned. Despite how bad these numbers seem, Virginia's hunting accidents are believed to be among the least of all states in the Union in proportion to the number of gunners afield.
