December Livestock Survey

The Federal-State Crop and Livestock Service in December is requesting farmers throughout the State to give information concerning the numbers of livestock on their farms. The Rural Mail Carriers about November 25 will leave a card in the mail box of about one out of every twelve farmers on their routes. Most farmers will be able to fill out these cards in about five minutes. The Department of Agriculture will use the information obtained to estimate numbers of cattle on farms, number of sheep, number of sows farrowing this fall and pigs saved, the number of sows expected to farrow next spring, and the number of chickens on farms. Also, information is obtained which greatly helps in making the annual estimates of milk and egg production. The more cards received, the more accurate the estimates will be. Therefore, I want to urge every farmer who receives one of these cards to fill it out immediately and to put it in his mail box for the rural carrier to collect and forward to the Departmnt of Agriculture in Richmond. The results of this survey will help farmers to determine whether to increase or decrease their livestock during the coming year. These reports are the basis for county estimates which show the trend in livestock numbers
