Returns-Per-Ewe Contest
Open To Virginia Sheepmen
Farmers in Virginia who own 15 ewes or more are eligible to compete for prizes in a “returnsper-ewe” contest.
George Allen, Jr., associate animal husbandman at VPI, says the contest, now in its second year, is designed to encourage better flock management practices in Virginia. It is sponsored by the Virginia Purebred Sheep Breeders’ Association and the VPI Agricultural Extension Service. , Sheepmen interested in competing should sign up by February 28. Entry blanks are available* from county agents, members of the Sheep Breeders Association, or the animal husbandry department at “VPI.
Farmers entering the contest should have an official count made of ewes in December or January. County agents, vocational education instructors, SOS representatives, or any member of the Association can make the count.
The contestants who have the greatest returns per ewe will be the winners of the contest. Prizes are: first, $35; second, $20; third, $10; and fourth to tenth, $5 each. Contestants must keep records on: wool -freight and receipts; market weight; grade and price of lambs sold; and must give ewe lambs kept for replacement the same per head value as average lambs in the first shipment. They also must use a registered ram, and keep for official records during the contest the exact number of ewes signed up for originally.
