Soil Saver Notes
Edgar Sims, Crooked Run; ColJack Sigman, Reva and Woodrow Coughlin of Castleton are etsablishing their crop rotations in contour strips on sloping fields. Sims and Sigman have been fanning contour paterns for several years and state that, “This is the only way to farm hill fields.”
Soil Conservation Service Technicians working in cooperation with the Culpeper Soil Conservation District, asisted the farmers in locating and working their contour lines. Technicians also helped the farmers determine which strips to plow first depending upon the type of rotation to be followed.
District Supervisor T. G. Ragsdale and Soil Conservation Service Technician L. B. Henretty are in Lynchburg this week attending the Evecutive Committee meeting of the State Association of Soil Conservation District Supervisors. Ragsdale is the treasurer of the local Culpeper Soil Conservation District and Chairman of the Program Committee of the State Association. He has been very interested and active in all' phases of Soil Conservation District work at the state level in Virginia.
Mr. Ragsdale will persent a paper in the essay contest sponsored by the Spencer Chemical* Company of Kansas City, Mo. All of the contestants in Virginia will then compete in the Regional contest after which the national finals will be held in Omaha, Nebraska. The national winner will be awarded $1000 by the Spencer Chemical Company.
