Plans for the 1953 Semi-annual Bangs vaccination program of heifer calves 4-8 months old are now being- made. Indications are thdt some herd owners are not planning to tkeep any replacemen heifers. In certain cases a plan is wise but it is probably not wise in most cases. With declining beef prices the more important it is to have a high percentage of a calf crop to sell. Leading cattlemen throughout the county consider it a “must” to build towards having a herd made up wholly from heifers that were calfhood vaccinated and to maintain such a herd. There are but few herds in the county that have reached this calf crop insurance goal.
While the amount of the vaccination fee borne by the state has been reduced, the cost to the owner, 50c per calf, is still mighty cheap protection.
Those who have not sent in their requests for heifer-vaccination should call the county agent’s office (telephone 2231). ’Tis too late to mail in a request.

Delegates attending the State Short Course this week at Blacksburg are: Lelia Gentry, Caroletta Gough, Betty Rutherford, Kelly Updike, John Turner, and Newbill Miller. Because of sickness Rappahannock will not have a team in the state-wide livestock judging contest held during the short course. Archie Bailey, Jr., recently underwent a throat operation, and Jacob Sisk, the fourth member of the team, was in an automobile accident losing several teeth. Reports are that both boys are making satisfactory progress toward recovery. They have our best wishes and sympathy as such was disappointing to their coach as well as to the team members themselves. Blacksburg, be on the look-out for our Rappahannock team in ’54.
