A report on the recent exercises of Confederate Memorial Day was given by Miss Wright, chairman of the committee on arrangements. Mrs. Calfee reported that she had completed the sale of 300 Confederates notes, with verses, which had been a source of revenue to the chapter, and asked permission to have more of these verses printed. She also reported bestowing the prize offered by the chapter for the best essay on “Women in Wartime” to Kenneth Dobyns, of Culpeper High School.
The original paper of Mrs. D. James Coleman was on President Jefferson Davis and in this she brought out several interesting details of his career, even the fact that he certainly possess a sense of humor! She paid a high tribute to his qualities as a Christian gentleman, who had been made to suffer, vicariously, for the South which he had served.
Miss Adella Yowell was not able to be present at this meeting which she nevertheless entertained, and her niece, Mrs. John W. Yowell, Jr., acted as hostess for her. Following the meeting, refreshments were served by the ladies of the St. Stephen’s Guild. It was announced that this would be the last; meeting of the chapter until September.
