spittlebug is described as a yellowish young insect, called a nymph, which occur in masses of . spittle-like secretions on plants. It is a one generation insect and there, fore only damages the first cutting of Clover and Alfalfa by sucking the sap from the plants. Besides reducing the total yield. of hay the spittlebug reduces the, quality by sucking the juices from" the plant reducing its vitamin content. Infestation is considered serious when spittle masses give the ground surface a foot a whitish appearance. ALSO CONTROLS ROOT CURCULIO:

In addition to controlling the spittlebug, heptachlor is the only chemical known to effectively control the clover root curculio.- The larvae of this insect feeds on the feeder and tap roots of both alfalfa and clover which reduces the plants ability to take up plant, foods and water which in turn reduces growth and in addition allows entry of fungi which may kill the root entirely or increase, loss of plants through heaving of the soil in freezing and thawing. This insect was one of the pri-Jtn-irv reasons agronomist until comparatively recent years con-^ ~sfdered“red‘xlover a biennial thus great things are expected of heptachlor.

It will be interesting to observe come back ability as well as the longevity of the stands of alfalfa and clover at these farms for herein also lies a means of measuring the economy of its use. At present it is estimated to cost $10.00$12.00 per acre to treat with heptachlor, however, rates of application and concentrate farms are still to be studied.
