High School Teachers_ Enjoy “Indoor Picnic”
The recent arrival of the outof-season cold weather changed_ the well-laid plans of the teacher^ of Rappahannock High for their annual outdoor picnic. Instead of the rustic benches of the spacious outside, they feasted on familiar tables in the school auditorium Wednesday evening, May 5. The arrangement committee consisting of Mrs. David. Corbin, Mrs* Fisher Burford and Fred Hutchison, made the change with ease, and the result was equally enjoyable.
Among those present at the picnic in addition to the committee were Miss Mary Jenkins, Mrs. Arlene Wake, Mrs. Jessie Cox, v and her guest, Mrs. AM. Hickman, D. C. Cascio, A. P. Barker, Miss Emma MacArthur, David and Richard Corbin,_Miss Jean__ Brown, Mr. and Mrs. J. H« Bettondorf, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Nichols, Mrs. Fred Hutchison, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Winfrey.
4-H NEWS
In the last month several events have taken place that are very important to the Rappahannock 4-H Club boys.
The Rappahannock County Sears, Roebuck Pig Chain was judged for the second time by Ralph Westing, Extension Swine Specialist from V. P. I. All the hogs in the chain are registered purebred Poland China with litters. The Flint 4-H’ers were awarded prizes at a banquet given by the' Sears, Roebuck at Warrenton for this good work in caring for the hogs this year, Ivory Atkins, Jr. received top honors and $60.00 in prize money "for the best sow and litter. Eddie Sutphin won second _ prize and $25.00 and Glen Updike won third prize and $15.00, and Charles Leake won $10.00 and the 4th prize ribbon. The scores were very close and all of these should be congratulated for their fine work.
The 4-H boys on the Rappahannock livestock judging team tried their luck in the area contest at Staunton in April after attending the livestock judging school in Madison and numerous workouts in judging livestock on farms. The team composed of Kelly Updike, Jackie Sisk, Glen Updike, Jimmy Yates, placed 9th out of 15 teams in the contest. This record is very good consider-; ing the competition of the more experienced teams of the area.
