Forest fires in Virginia have been on the increasethisjulydue to the deficiency of rain in many areas of the state. Distrrict Fores-? ter D. G. Wilfong, Jr., says this this increase of "fires during this dry weather has maifily been caused by smokers.
Mr. Wilfong further stated that he does not believe that all of the people in Virginia are familiar with the new forestry legislation that went into effect July 1, 1954, concerning throwing inflammatory objects from a vehicle on highways while in or near some lands. For everyone’s information this new legislation is quoted below:
“It shall be unlawful for any person to throw, toss of drop from a vehicle moving or standing on a highway any lighted smoking material, lighted match, lighter material of any nature, or any bomb, device or contraption liable to setfire to inflammable material on the ground while in or near any forest land, brush land or field containing inflammable vegetation or trash.
Any person violating the pro- ' visions of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon Conviction thereof, shall be punished by confinement in jail for a period not exceeding thirty days or fined not less than ten dollars nor more than one hundred dollars, or both, for each separate offense.” * f
