The monument erected to Peyton Anderson is a bowlder of the famous Fairfax pink granite, quarried at Falls Church, and bears a bronze tablet with the following inscription:
“Peyton Anderson of the
Rappahannock Calvary, was
severely wounded on picket
duty 122 feet "northwest of this spot May 27, 1861. The
first soldier of the South to • shed blood for the Confederacy. Erected by Fairfax Chapter, U.D.C., Msy 27, 1927.”
The address of the afternoon was delivered by Representative R. Wakon Moore, of Fairfax. Mr. Moore outlined the events leading up to that of May 27,1861, and eulogized all the men of the South who had shed their blood for a “cause which went down to defeat! without dishonor.” Just as the Mississippi River, whose mighty waters are now flooding the Middle West and bringing sorrow and destruction to countless thousands has its beginning in an obscure
