At da)fcreak, Anderson and Lilia rd we^-e suddenly surrounded by a detachment from the 2nd New York Calvary, which had come out from Washington, and in the skirmish which ensued Anderson was so severely wounded that he fell from his' horse and was left on the field for dead. Lillard was taken to Washington, the first Confederate prisoner of war, and his capture is said to have created enormous public interest. Anderson lay unconscious until 4 o’clock, when he was able to stagger to a nearby farm house for aid. He later recovered sufficiently to servo under CoL Mosby.
