The history of the events of May 27, 1861 has been authenticated by the Fairfax Chapter from old records aind the accounts of eyewitnesses. One week after Virginia had adopted its order of secession in the spring of 1861, the “Old Guard” of Rappahannock County, one of the first military units to be called to the Confederate colors, whose history dates back to 1812, left its home county and . proceeded east to become a part of Company B of die 6th Virginia Calvary. It was attached to 'EwcRY command, which in May was quartered at Fairfax Court 'House.
