returned to r air fax Court House, where in the engagement John Quincy Marr, the captain of the Warren ton Rifles, was killed ii> action, the first soldier to give his life for the cause of the South. A monument in front of the court house commemorates the spot where he fell. Annually on that date the vererans of Marr’s Camp meet with their friends- in the court house to hear an address.
Following Mr. Moore’s speech Friday afternoon two slips of ivy were planted by Mrs. F. D. Richardson, president of the Fairfax U.D.C. and Mrs. John Barbour, of Fairfax under whose direction the historical data for this event has been gathered. Mrs. Barbour is the niece of William Li Hard, Anderson’s companion, and the daughter of the late Judge Grimsley of Rappahannock County, a corporal of the 6th Virginia Calvary at the time of the episode and later promoted to the rank of colonel. As a child Mrs. Barbour frequently heard the story of this encounter, and when the Fairfax Chapter started preparations for erection of the memorial die was able to produce an account of tfci>‘
