The Turtle was constructed by the French Undersea Research Center with National Geograohi; aid and christened in Julv 1959. Measuring 6.5 feet in diameter and 5 feet in height, it has a steel hull with a top hatch. Pilot and observer lie prone on a rubber mattress and peer out the Plexiglass ports. Propulsion comes from two water jets.

The interior of the Turtle looks FLe a bowl of instruments. Included are a gyrocompass, automatic pilot, jet control rudders, camera controls, depth gauge and manuals for a hydraulic claw that collects samples of marine life.

The only trouble with being a good sport is that you have to lose to prove that you are.
