In Fairfax a number of people wanted to learn bridge, others wanted to learn to square dance. Music and ballet lessons were wanted for children. Qualified instructors were found and hired on a part-time basis. Some were school teachers, or coaches .. . all were employed and looking for supplemental income.
School personnel, as everywhere else, proved interested in development of the whole child. The School Board cooperated* They got their heads together, determined the costs of keeping buildings . open, supervised, cleaned up and ready for their intended use. Adults paid a nominal fee to cover these costs. The adult program was self supporting ... no money was taken away from the formal school educational program. In the Bridge Classes, the instructor said she could teach 4 tables at once. She gave an hours instruction per week. Cost to each individual amounted to $12 for each ten lesson series. Money went to pay instructor and buy equipment to improve the program.
Could organization of Little League ball serve as a recreation activity for our young boys? Not if it includes the necessity for purchasing expensive uniforms. When a big expenditure is put into an activity, as Dr. Thompson said, it is quite common for Dad to rake Junior over the coals if he strikes out or fails to catch a pop fly. However, boys can have just as much fun playing baseball in a tee shirt and baseball cap . . . and a recreation program might include a league organized on this basis. WHAT CAN BE DONE HERE?
This will require some planning. What are the transportation problems? What do the people of different age groups want in the way of recreation ? Probably some of our recreation should be conducted in school building, some in fire halls. To an extent the facility most accessable to our concentrations of ' P°PulaUcm will govern the recreation that can be offered.
Adult recreation probably can be financed within itself, or in other words be self supporting. Recreation for youngsters probably will need two-fold financing. In Fairfax, part came from family subscriptions, part came from organizations and businesses making donations.
