A need also exists for establishing better maturity standards for Virginia apples. Some regulation of picking dates for fresh market apples seems to be one solution to the maturity problem. However, this first date at which a variety of apples can be picked must be varied by locality, say the economists.
Nationally, the 1962 peach crop appears to be around 75.4 million bushels. As with apples, dry weather resulted in a short crop. Processingwise, the canned pack should be large because of the near-record production of California Clingstones.
Stocks of trozen peaches in storage at the end of August were about 35 percent higher than the 1957 to 1961 average. Stocks are only slightly higher than those of last year, though.
The future outlook for peaches indicates more commercial procession can be expected, partially because of their short storage life in the raw state, but also because of the decline in home canning. A longer marketing season for fresh peaches may be expected as newer varieties come into full production.
