Annual Meeting
The Sixtv-seventh Annual Meetiny of the Virginia State Horticultural Society will be held January 28-30, 1963. Head-quarters and all session* of the meeting will be at the Hotel Roanoke. Roanoke. Much of the meeting will be devoted to the production problems of apples, however, peach and apple marketing will also be discussed.
Outstanding leaders In their fields head up the speakers list. Jordan H. Levin, of East Lansing. Mich., will report on the development of mechanical harvesting procedures and mechanical aids to harvesting. Virginia growers are vitally in- : terested in any procedure that will reduce the labor required at harvest time. James B. Moore. Executive Vice-President of National Apple Institute, Washington, D. C.. will discuss the oportunities for the continued export of apples to the countries of the European Economic Community. All peach growers are interested in how to make money with peaches. Curt E. Eckert, a grower from Belleville, 111., will tell growers how they have made this a profitable crop. Dr. Freeman S. Howlett, Chairman, Department of Horticulture and Forestry, Ohio State University, has recently visited in Europe.j studying their horticultural industries. Dr. Howlett will share with us the production techniques he observed in Europe that he thinks will be of value to Virginia apple producers. James F. Laise of Winchester, will head a panel of produce merchandisers who will consider the changes in the apple marketing picture due to controlled atmosphere storage. Dr. Howard A. Rollins, jr.. horticulturist, VPI, will moderate a panel on pest v control. Extension and Research Specialists will discuss many other topics of interest"*: to fruit growers. {
The annual meeting offers Virginia Fruit Growers on excellent opportunity to get to know their fellow growers, their research and extension service personnel and to segk solutions to industry problems. All fruit growers arc cordially invited and urged to attend.
