Washington - Election of Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., to the House Interior and Veterans Affairs Committees gives Virginia representation on these Congressional units for the first time in recent years. The new 7th District Congressman received two committee seats, instead of the expected one, when they we reassigned by the Democratic Committee on Committees last week. The result was to boost to 14 - out of a total of" 20 - the number of House standing committees having Virginians on. the majority side.
The Interior Committee - the full name of which is Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs - has jurisdiction which includes legislation affecting national parks, monuments, battlefields and other federal public lands. The Committee on Veterans Affairs has charge of veteran benefit laws and the provision of veteran hospital facilities.
Mr. Marsh made this comment on his committee posts:
"In view of the importance of the travel industry to Virginia, I am particularly pleased to have the opportunity of working with the committee concerned with the national parks and other federal reser*>4tions having historic, scenic or recreational importance. There is room for considerable improvement, I believe, in federal policy on utilization and management of public lands suitable for recreational development.
