Greene County has a resident who has been connected with road work for many years, In the person of Mr. Otto W. Gilbert of Ruckersville. Mr. Gilbert has seen many changes come about since he came home from World War I where he served for three years, and participated In the final battle November 18, 1918. ! He arrived In Greene County June 18, 1919, and was appointed road commissioner for a four-year term by Judge Fishburn.
Shortly after his appointment the state took over the county roads and Gilbert served with the State for eighteen years. He worked In three counties of the Culpeper District. Later he was sent to Rappahannock to open up the roads and help put in new bridges. His appropriations permitted him from $300 j to $400 per' mile. Says Mr. Gilbert, "If the State had this same work to do now, it would cost $4,000 a mile. The men got 25£ an hour and worked ten hours a day. Those years, Patrolmen were paid $75 per month. They managed the roads with pushcarts and built bridges by using rocks and logs,’’ C. W. Lambert who had an office at Gordonsville is reported to have said that Gilbert l could get more work done than any man In the Culpeper District.
