Keaity transactions are taking place daily which involve changes in farm land and division or combination of farm acreage allotments. Rappahannock ASCS county office manager J. W, Coates says that certain regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture apply to the combination and division of farms with allotments. Unless these regulations are adhered to strictly, serious trouble may result.
For example, he said, “When a farm is sold in more than one tract, the farm allotment may be divided by either of two methods: (1) In the same ratio that the cropland on each tract is to the total cropland, or (2) In relation to the amount of allotment which each tract contributed to the total allotment, if the farm was the result of a combination within the past six years." ^ For this reason, it is most important that a proper determination be made of the cropland on a farm before it is sold. When the persons involved in a fealty transaction cannot arrive at a mutual understanding of the amount of cropland on a farm, ASCS offers a service to predetermine cropland acreage.
