For each child absent the county loses $1.48 per day, according to figures compiled for the 1962-63 school year. Before Christmas this year in the Washington Elementary School alone there were 1,605 total days of absence. School with good attendance get larger appropriations than schools with poor attendance even though the basic expenses remain the same. It only follows that the money . lost would be used for the improvement of School facilities. This is the mercenary angle to absenteeism but even more Important is the fact that a poor attender usually makes low grades while the regulars get the higher marks. Also, records are kept on each student during his-school career and poor attendance automatically casts an unfavorable shadow on an application for a Job.

In addition to their regular work the teachers must spend precious time giving make-up work and doing extra report book work for each and every absence.
