a lung-cancer death rate four and a half times that of nonsmokers who live in cities.* One leaflet brought out the fact that a pack-a-day smoker has “ten times the risk of dying of lung cancer, about twice the chance of dying of coronary heart disease, more than twice the probability of getting chronic bronchitis and three times the likelihood of developing emphysema.* At the next meeting of the Executive Committee of the local tuberculosis association when the program of work is planned for the coming fiscal year, educational campaigns on sjnoklng will be one of the items seriously considered. The President, Joe McDaniel of Stanley, Virginia, reported that as of Monday this week, the campaign for funds through Christmas Seal contributions is not up to last year, and that if more educational work is to be done not only among adults but with children, through assistance of the teachers, the need for funds is greater, rather than lessened. He urged that citizens help all they can with funds so that more can be done in each community. The Christmas Seal Campaign report is this year $32,913.71 and last year $36,221.71.

All veterans and all dependents of deceased veterans who are receiving pension benefits from the Veterans Adminlnstration are reminded that they have only two weeks to complete and return their annual Income questionnaire card. On January 14, 1964,the Roanoke Regional Office of the VA said that about 25% of the 36,000 cards originally sent out had not come back.
