With the passing of Jan. 15 most hunting ceased in the Old Dominion except for rabbit, quail and grouse hunting which will continue until January 31 in the Western part of the state and until February 15 in most Eastern counties. Also extending until the end of January or mid February are squirrel seasons in several counties, seasons on furbearers in most counties, and the season on turkeys (gobblers only) in Pittsylvania County. Hunters are urged to consult their S ummary of Virginia Game Laws for exact season closing dates on all species in the particular county or counties in which they intend to try a late season hunt. Quail hunters have lost quite a few potential hunting days because of recent snows, and will probably lose more before the season’s end February 15. Quail are the only game species which cannot be hunted in the snow since the Commission revised the snow hunt ing regulation in 1963.
TRAPPING SEASON IN MID-STRIDE
Trapping season in the Old Dominion which began Dec. 1 on most species is now in full swing. Aside from local exeptions on foxes and raccoons, and a January 31 closing date on rabbit trapping, the trapping seaBon will continue through March 10. About a thousand licensed trappers take part in Virginia’s annual fur harvest, plus the many who trap on their own lands without a HrpnRP Virginia’s 1962-63 fur harvest included 99,019 muskrat, 14,237 raccoon, 6,628 opossum. 3,922 skunk, 2,119 mink, 986 beaver and 105 weasel pelts according to the reports oltur dealers. Most of the muskrat and mink pelts were marketed in the Tidewater Section. Although Virginia’s trapping regulations are not too complicated, they are strickly en forced. A county or statewide trapping license is required except when the trapper confines his operations to lands he owns or rents. Traps set on the property of others must carry the name and address of the trapper, and all traps be tended once each day to re move the trapped animals. Squirrels and bears may not be trapped and rabbits may only be taken with box traps during the special season for this type of trapping.
