Horse end Buggy Days Reported On Decrease
It cannot be said that Virginia is still in the horse and buggy days. Even the state tax commissioner admits it is not. This note of progress came to light when state Sen. John Alexander of Warrenton prepared a bill to do away with the annual tax on livery stables which charge to take care of horses. But before he introduced it, he asked state Tax Commissioner C. H. Mofrisett whether it would do much damage to the state treasury. Morris8ett wrote back that he was not opposed to the bill. After all, he said, the annual levy--$2.SO per stable in rural areas and $5 per stable in cities—brought in only $387.50 in the 1962-63 fiscal year. And then he delivered what is probably the death knell for the tax; "It is a relic of other times,"
