Eastern Deer Kill
To Exceed 26;
A rough tabulation of reports received to date gives officials reason to believe that the Eastern Virginia deer kill exceeded 26,000 animals in the season just ended. This would be just short of last year’s record total of 28,960 taken in “East of the Blue Ridge’counties. So far 24,000 Eastern kill tags have been returned and an estimated 2,000 plus are expected to come in. Adding the Western kill of 11,250 animals would put this year’s total bag above 37,000 deer, not much below last year’s record state total of 38,883. The only consistent factor apparent in the Eastern tag returns was a generally lower take on the larger public hunting areas.
