These are the books which enrich each generation and they present an ever-present mirror in which we can check our thinking against the thinking of other times. These we call The Great Books. Among them are the works of the thinkers of Greece and Romq of France and England, and of the East and the West. They are so many and complex that a man could not read all of them In a lifetime, let alone understand all he read. Back in 1947 In Chicago, a Great Books Program developed out of employees’ discussion groups led by Charles F. Strubbe, Jr. and otherq growing from a membership of 250 to nearly a quarter million with headquarters listed In most of our major cities. A Great Books Foundation has been established and provides guidance in reading and discussions to any group of 15 or more who will meet together twice a month to study and discuss given lists of books. There are usually two leaders who ask questions designed to stimulate thought and discussion. Theytakedlfferent views, hoping to bring out all sides and help each one find his own conclusions. To know and to think clearly are more important alms of the Foundation than merely read and discuss for pleasure. As Mr. Strubbe once said "The Great Books groups are Democracy in action."
