Poachers Cut, Steal
Walnut Logs * *
With the shortage of walnut lumber in our country, poachers have taken to the woods, anybody’s woods, and are cutting and selling walnut logs, according to local law enforcement officials. This is going on in many areas including Rappahannock, Frederick, Fauquier.
At the same time walnut rustlers were caught in Charles County, Md„ last week, the Sheriff’s Department in Rappahannock was busy solving a walnut theft near Washington, Va. Alvin Edward Meadows of Clifton, Va. was arrested Thursday, Feb. 13 and charged with grand larceny. He was released on $3,500 bond. Anyone having walnut timber is advised by Sheriff Estes to check their stand and report any missing trees to him. The Federal Government put an embargo on the export of walnut Just last week. It takes nearly a century for a walnut tree to mature enough to make good furniture and America’s supply is being depleted.

Amissville Banquet
Amissville firemen and junior firemen were honored with a banquet Friday given by the Ladies Auxiliary of the group, with their many guests from fire companies, auxiliaries and rescue squads of the surrounding area the total present was over a hundred. Ralph Rowzie, president of the fire company, was toastmaster for the dinner and program following. The Rev. James Harrison was called upon for the invocation and Mrs. , Russell Hackley, president of the auxiliary, welcomed the guests. During dinner Miss Sandra Rowzie played piano selections. Mrs. A. C. Latham presented fire chief Braxton James a check for the fire company in the amount of $1,500 as a gift from the auxiliary. Kenneth Bywaters on behalf of the junior fireman presented the senior group with a $100 check and Eugene Dodson, acting for the Amissville Ruritan Club, presented the chief a $100 check. The Rev. Jack Coker of Radiant was. guest speaker.
