dred of tHtese game animals were shot in Arizona-, New Mexico and Texas. Alaska is, of course, our last remaining t r u e wilderness state. Alaska certainly provides romantic hunting grounds for those who can afford to go there and hunt species uncommon or absent from the other 49 states. In addition to the 9,000 moose shot in Alaska, we note that 460 grizzly and brown bears, 600 mountain goats, and 200 polar bears were killed there. Hunters in Alaska also harvested 20,000 barren-ground caribous and 650 Dali sheep, a species native to Alaska. Our newest state, Hawaii, has provided quite a different kind of shooting in that the species most often hunted are wild goats, wild sheep and wild pigs. Even 20 wild cattle were shot. An Asiatic species, the axis steer, has been introduced into parts of Hawaii and is doing well enough to permit the harvest of 700 animals.
