farms as of January 1 numbered 106,488,000 head. This is an all-time record high, and the sixth straight time that these numbers have increased over the preceding year. Milk cows had decreased 3 per cent fft»rrt"'T963, while beef cattle was up 6 per cent. Virginia's cattle numbers show the effect of last summer’s drought. While beef cows were cut back only 2 per cent, beef heifers were reduced 14 per cent, beef calves 8 and steers 20 per cent. Milk cows were down 3 per cent. United States slaughter for the past six months has been running abdve that of last year following closely the higher level of cattle on feed. The January, 1964 slaughter was up 13 per cent, but should level out during the weeks ahead. Feeders reported intentions to market 6 per cent more finished cattle in the Jan-March period than a year earlier. Marketings after this should be under a year earlier since lighter weight animals on feed were down about 5 per cent. Beef prices should hold steady for the next few weeks. These prices will reflect demands which will see a sharp decrease in the pork supply, and a 2 or 3 pier cent, increase in poultry. In Chicago last week, choice grade steers brought $21.75$22.50. Good grade steers were $19.50-$21.00. Choice grade heifers sold at $21.00$21.50. and good grade heifers brought $19.50 to $20.50.
