America The Beautiful But, how many of us try to keep it beautiful? Tons of litter and debris deface our countryside-marring the natural scenic beauty of America. More than 50 million tax dollars are spent each year just to remove litter from primary highways alone-not to mention additional millions spent cleaning up towns, cities parks, beaches, aria otnerpuolic areas. It is estimated that 750 to 1,000 people are killed each year as a result of cars striking or swerving to avoid objects thrown on highways. Litter is a fire hazard-litter and rubbish caused 18,500 fires last year in one midwest city alone. It is a menace to health. It is a national problem which has reached the magnitude of a national disgrace. Most Americans have felt no personal responsibility for the appearance of the nation's highways, beaches, parks and public places. They have no feeling of guilt when tossing trash on roadsides, city streets or rural property. They simply have not realized the staggering amount of litter left in their wake—and the costly effort required to remove it.
