4-H Group Attends
Forestry Camp
A dozen eager, curious 4-H boys took to the woods Tuesday for an overnight camp out and instruction concerning forestry projects currently being taken by some clubs.The camp was held on the farm of C.E. Johnson, Jr. near Sperryville from 1 p.m. July21 until 10:30 a.m. the following day. The youngsters were instructed on insects and diseases of trees, identification and growth and pruning trees. Instructors were A. B. Lyon, assistant Extension Forester of V.P.I., County Agent W. H. Lyne, Rappahannock Forest Warden Raymond Johnson and State Forester William Vernam.
Instruction and actual pruning practice extended from 2 p.m. until 5 when camp was set up. Chief Cook Lyne had supper ready at 5:30 and following this the group played ball. An evening program was held with a camp fire. Lights out and quiet was called at 11. Wednesday morning the group cleaned up the area and toured the fire tower on Red Oak Mountain before breaking camp at 10:30 to return home. Those attending were 4-H members Howard Foster, Bernard Foster, Nelson Putnam, James Stringfellow, Charles Stringfellow, Tommy Williams, Maury Nichols, Frances Payne, Joey Durden Bill Kilby, Warren Beebe ana Bradford Beebe. The forestry camp this year was sponsored by Mr. C. S. Williams, Virginia Carolina Veneer Corp. of Danville.In previous years it has been sponsored 'by Burkeville Veneer Corp., E. A. Cave, and G. W. Smith.
