In the Dumps
The Rappahannock Jaycees met at Hampton Inn Monday night, August 24. Although President T. C. Lea and Internal VP Jimmie Way land were absent due to vacationing and illness, respectively, the meeting went smoothly through the efforts of Garfield Burke. Members present were Buster Hitt, Julian Brown, Rodney Vest, Sonny Brown, Bill Leake, George Davis III, and Ed Clark. Outside guests included John McDivit of Culpeper and Bill Green, state chairman, of Charlottesville. The two main streams of discussion concerned the pos V, sibility of setting up public dumps throughout the county
group felt that the necessity of public dumps in the county was great and decided it would be an important undertaking. Several ideas were voiced; (1) obtaining a map of the county in an effort to determine several central locations in which a dump would be beneficial, (2) writing to the Sanitation Dept, in Richmond for additional information, (3) talking with Frances Thornton of the Rappahannock Health Dept. (4) working with the Board of Supervisors on the project. George Davis III was made chairman of the committee for carrying out tlje project. the preliminary steps have been taken to organize a country music festival during late September or October. The JCs intend to work with Eddie Matherly of “Big K“ Radio Station in Warrenton. Mr. Matherly, who is greatly interested in civic affairs, has been cooperative in both JC and Lion activity in the Warrenton and Fredericksburg areas and has expressed a desire to aid the Rappahannock organization. After the regular order of business Bill Green, State Chairman, spoke to the group. He praised the Rappahannock JCs and stated that the organization had gotten off to the fastest start and had the best Charter Night ceremonies he hadever seen. However he pointed out that our local unit should'work more closely with the national organization by attending district, regional and state meetings. Mr. Green, who holds both B.A. and M.A. degrees, stated that his membership in the JCs had a greater educational value than his college work. His talk was interesting and beneficial to all, and the group appreciated his appearance.
There is to be a special JC board meeting Monday night, August 31, 8:00 p.m. atHamp* ton Inn.
