The Extension Workers Conference held last week at Blacksburg was one of the best ever attended by your County Agent. Highlights applicable to this county’s agriculture were progress reports including observations on current research in tree fruits and fields of animal science. A new apple variety (unnamed) promises to replace the present York as so far it has shown no tendency what soever to corking. Also processing and packaging methods of apple slices were impressive. These had lots of eye appeal and excellent flavor. Charles Wood is working on several processing research projects. In Animal Science several projects really looked promising. There were two sheep projects that were most im— pressive; "Energy Levels for the Gestating and Lactating Ewe" and "Early Weaning and . Multiple Lambing”. If results of the former continue giving similar results as those experienced to date, significant savings can be had in budgeting feeds under the feed programs being incorporated as compared to standard rations. The latter research project is designed to wean lambs at 30 days, finish them on slated floors while the ewe is being rebred in an effort to get more frequent lambing. The v process also breaks the parasitic life cycle eliminating this problem which has limited the number of sheep that can be kept on a given acreage. One ewe in this flock produced 4 lambs that grossed $100.00 in 1 year and 4 days! While this is an isolated case
