ances, furniture, and apparel. Average American family income before federal income tax in 1963 was $7,510. There iaa been a 73 percent increase in the average income during the last 15 years. Allowing for rising costs of living; there has still been an increase of about 36.5 percent In real purchasing power. This rising trend of incomes has been reflected in the shifting from the lower income brackets to the middle and upper ones. For the year as a whole, plant and equipment expenditures are now expected to total $44 billion—a 12 percent increase over 1963. Inventory control has been widely used to reduce costs. This has enabled manufacturers to increase inventory less rapidly than sales. If a major strike were to threaten a basic Indus try, there would be a scramble for protective inventories. This might create a wide, zigzag pattern in employment and economic activity.
New construction changed little in June, following the decline in May. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of $65 billion in June was 2 per-' cent below the record level In March-April. Output of both consumer goods and business equipment Increased in June. Production of iron and steel remained strong, and there were small Increases for other durable and nondurable goods. The unemployment rate rose In June to 5.3 percent of the labor force, after seasonal adjustment, however, the July figures are down to 4.9 percent. The July figure is the Lowest in more than four years Total employment continued to increase and 72 million Americans are now gainfully employed.
